We created a different and better way to make polarized lenses. Instead of gluing layers onto a lens, we take a powerful polarized filter and form the lens around it with Plutonite®, our proprietary polycarbonate superhero. The result is a lens that’s clear enough to be used by world-class athletes worldwide and strong enough to stop a high-speed projectile dead in its tracks.

Coming Unglued.

A Sticky Situation.

There are sunglasses out there made with glue–not the white Elmer’s glue we used as kids, but glue nonetheless–applying a coat of it between the lens and the various layers of film applied to it. At Oakley, we find that a little bizarre. Perhaps that’s because we’re so laser–focused on superior optics. We work so relentlessly to engineer the finest optics on the planet that the idea of defiling them with glue seems…repulsive.

High Definition Optics® (HDO®) is the bedrock of Oakley’s superior clarity and reliability. Let’s be clear, Oakley’s HDO makes distortion disappear. No more seeing things here that really aren’t there. No more blurry objects in the distance. With HDO, you’ll find rocks, flagsticks, and potholes where they are supposed to be–where they truly are. In fact, not only does HDO meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) clarity testing requirements, it exceeds them.

 

 

Clarity Test

Blur is bad. This test measures how distinct and sharp an image appears when viewed through a lens.

 

Refractive Power Test

Bigger isn’t always better. This test measures how lenses magnify images and cause visual distortion.

 		  

Prism Test

Are your glasses showing you the true picture? This test measures how lenses bend light. As light is bent by the lens, objects appear to shift.

 		  

The Process.

Becoming an Oakley HDPolarized lens is unlike any other because after each phase of manufacturing, each lens undergoes a 100% quality inspection. We control everything–time, temperature, pressure–and exhaustively search for warpage and other clarity compromisers in the wrap and rake of the lens. These steps are elemental in Oakley’s XYZ optics, which ensure quality at every angle of view. If one step in the process is missed, quality would be compromised and, well, that just wouldn’t be Oakley.

What is Oakley OO?

You already know that Oakley Polarized delivers true neutral color recognition that sets the gold standard for HDO. But what you may not know is that the glare control and clarity of Polarized can be supplemented with color contrasting technology that enhances HDO in certain environments. We call this new Oakley innovation Oakley OO




 

By pushing down the blue tones in our Polarized lenses, we enable other colors to pop just a bit more, thereby emboldening the way contrast appears in certain environments.
